What to Consider When Buying Your First Dildo

If you have had very limited exposure or experience with adult products, buying your first dildo can be an equally exciting and nerve-wracking experience.

You drive to the store, work up the courage to walk in, and you’re immediately bombarded with a giant array of phallic products. You might be thinking, “where do I even begin?”

But if you’re lucky, your adult store of choice is Excitement and so you’re also greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable staff that works with you during the whole process, makes you feel comfortable and helps you sift through the wall of toys you’ve never even seen before.

After the nerves settle, all you're left with is the excitement to try your new pleasure product!

But if you want some prior knowledge before actually heading to the store, keep reading for a few tips on what to consider for your first dildo.

Material

Do you want something soft and squishy, with a lot of give? Do you want something solid and thick? Considering the material of your new toy will help narrow down your options quite a bit, and will also help you choose the perfect one for you. Safety is key, so make sure to choose a non-porous option (like silicone or glass) or take extra precaution if your toy is made of a jelly-like material (condoms, etc). Silicone is going to vary a bit, with extra squishy options or slightly firmer, but it will usually have some give. Glass, on the other hand, is going to feel solid and hard with a really nice glide. Spend some time thinking about what sensation you might prefer before choosing your new toy!

Vibrating or Acoustic

Some dildos are vibrating, and some are not, so deciding if you want an electronic or acoustic toy is going to help narrow your search a lot! Vibration can have a lot of added benefits, like making it a bit more versatile of a toy. Often it means you can use it either internally or externally, and get even more creative by moving it around to other erogenous zones. This is especially great for those who haven’t had much experience with toys, because it gives you a broader scope to explore and find out what you like. But if you know that internal use is your jam, you might be able to get a bit more specific with a non-vibrating toy.

Size & Shape

One of the most preference-oriented features of a toy to consider is its size and shape. Do you want something small, medium, or large? Do you want something curved and bulbous at the end or something shorter and stalkier? This might be where it gets hard to narrow down, because the size and shape of dildos can vary so drastically. But it’s a great chance for you to see what is out there and experiment!

Aesthetics

And finally, aesthetics. I’m a huge believer that sex is all about the senses. When it comes to solo-sex, we often ignore some senses like smell, sight, and sound. So I always encourage people to get a toy that is pleasing to the eye, because pleasure to one sense will enhance pleasure in other senses! Get one that is your favorite color, or has a pattern on it that creatively speaks to you. Trust me, it will enhance the whole experience!

So - now that you’re a little more familiar with the product, and have a better idea of what you actually want - all that’s left is to head to your local adult boutique and pick out your new toy!

Don’t worry, the staff at any of our locations is ready and eager to lend a hand and share any tips or suggestions they might have.

Be safe and have fun!
